The majority of our students continue their post-16 studies here at Holcombe, joined each year by a number of external students from other Kent and Medway schools and students from Trust schools, including the Victory Academy. We are a large Sixth Form and offer a wide range of subjects for students to choose from.
Although your academic success is at the heart of everything we do, we believe that education is about a lot more than that, therefore; we provide lots of opportunities for you to participate in a range of clubs and activities including: school trips; sporting teams and events; the opportunity to participate in debates and much, much more. We will also be keen for you to develop your leadership skills through becoming a school council representative, a prefect, a student mentor or by becoming a member of the School Captains’ team.
Holcombe Grammar School has recently opened its new and exciting Sixth Form centre; The Hive! This dynamic new space offers students an area in which they can study, relax, collaborate and socialise. Fully equipped with study spaces, IT equipment and comfortable seating areas.
The Hive is designed to enhance students’ Sixth Form experience, as well as offer a taste of university life to Holcombe’s Sixth Form students, many of whom will be moving on to higher education after their Sixth Form studies.
The area is split into several sections where students can take part in lessons, study and relax during their Sixth Form journey at Holcombe Grammar School.
A-Levels are a different ‘beast’ to GCSE’s.
Our Sixth Form students are expected and required to evolve if they are to achieve success at A-Level. If they revise as they did for their GCSE’s they will seriously underachieve at A-Level.
The following booklet has been taken from ‘The A-Level Mindset’ (Steve Oakes and Martin Griffin) and compiled by experienced teachers who have researched the challenges faced by A-Level students when it comes to their studies and future career aspirations. It contains useful tips and advice to guide students through the ‘maze’ that is A-Level study.
Students are strongly recommended to utilise this booklet in helping them organise their studies and revision effectively so that they can achieve the best grades possible come prelim and final examinations.
Holcombe Grammar School is an Accredited Thinking School; we are unique in our focus to share with students the tools to become a life-long learner, and to develop the best possible habits for success in life. It is an educational community which involves both students and staff learning how to think reflectively, critically and creatively.
Within this framework we incorporate a Toolkit of Hats, Maps and Keys and students are taught to use them effectively to support their learning and structure their thinking. These skills and habits are timeless and our graduates will regularly finding themselves continuing to work within this structure in further education and the world of work.
